RON KILBOURNE INTERVIEW - 02/03/2004 |
He works for
the City of Huntington Beach and visits the NPPL office, well, shall
we say daily. He is very involved with the league as he also holds
a seat on the NPPL
Rules Committee. He's known for his vivaciousness on the field,
his loyalty to his sponsors and for his love of gambling on and
off the field. His name is Ron Kilbourne, the owner of Professional
team Bushwackers, and in an interview with the NPPL
he opened up about the teams' plans for 2004, answers some tricky
sponsorship questions, and sheds some light on the history of the
team name "Bushwackers".
What
are the Bushwackers' plans for 2004?
There are four Bushwackers teams:
Professional
-Captained by "Jason"
Division I - Captained by Armando Villanueva
Division II - Captained by Jason Duckworth
Division III - Captain still to be announced
The
roster for the professional team is still being developed as contractual
signing will take place this month.
The
teams plan to do all the NPPL events this year, a couple out of
the country, as well as running their own tournament this year.
More information on the tournament will be posted on www.teambushwackers.com
in the near future.
Tell
us about your sponsorships for 2004
any changes?
For the last 8 years, Zap has been our paint sponsor and will
once again provide us with their top of the line paint, now called
420. Developed by Jay Muncaster, and a "secret scientist"
(hmmm, wonder who that could be!)
Worr
Games. WGP have sponsored Bushwackers for the last 14 years. Budd
Orr is by far the most generous man I have ever met.
There's
a new company coming into the market for our clothing, it's called
"Circle". All of our clothing is being custom made to
compete against the high-end lines out there. Of course as always,
SC Village and Hollywood Sports continue to sponsor Bushwackers.
Other sponsors will fall into place before the season begins.
The team name "Bushwackers" is a bit crazy, do we want
to know where it came from?
In "Outlaw of Josie Wales" a Clint Eastwood Civil War
film from the 70's, Bushwackers was the name of a group of Renegade
soldiers no one could catch, they would run in, take everyone out,
and move on. Hence, "Bushwackers".
Remember,
this was back when paintball teams were named after original, creative
names; now they're just named after cities.
How long has the team been in existance?
Since 1984, and I'm the only original Bushwacker still on the
team. I was the original captain. If anyone thinks they've played
more than anyone else, try catching up with me. You've got 20 years
to catch up
and I play every weekend.
What do the sponsorship changes for Worr Games mean to the Bushwackers?
The team will be able to gather the talent it needs to compete
at the top level.
How long have you been sponsored by Worr Games?
Since 1989 or 1990, so about 14 years.
What are your personal reasons for being a member of the NPPL Rules
Committee? Do you have any goals/changes you'd like to make to the
rules for the 2004 season?
Contrary to popular belief that the Bushwackers are this or that,
I do believe that the best reffing will give the best team that
chance to be at the top. Without the rules or the people to enforce
them, or direction, you will never be able to achieve that.
What
would you like us to know about Ron Kilbourne?
Paintball is my life.
What
would you like us to know about the 2004 Bushwackers?
We're Coming.
